There’s a rising new moon in the sign of clean lines, side-eye and self-improvement.
The New Moon in Virgo arrives on Monday, September 2, 2024, at 9:55 PM EDT, bringing with it the call to discern, direct, set the course, and remove anything that crowds, overwhelms, or compromises growth.
Virgo is synonymous with ritual cleansing and the energy of this new moon is preparatory; it is sweeping the temple floor, anointing the body, ironing clothes and dipping candles.
And while Virgo is, of course, symbolized in the sign and sky by the virgin, perhaps it is time to rethink this concept. Virginity isn’t what you think, folks—but more on that later.
What is a new moon?
A new moon occurs when the moon is in conjunction with the sun and is no longer visible from our vantage point on Earth.
The energy peaks at a full moon and falls low and slowly at a new moon, a tiling celestial clearing that prompts a new lunar cycle.
The new moon always matches the zodiac sign the sun is moving through. In this case, it would be the mutable Earth, do not be sorry, it will be the best sign of Virgo.
Virgo is ruled by Mercury and lords over the sixth house of daily rituals, bodily health and service. Thus, this lunation is about redefining/refining our relationship with the body and purpose.
The meaning of the new moon in Virgo
While this lunar’s fresh, hard-working AF influence offers a good time for goal-setting and planning, this new moon is forming a near-exact opposition to father planet Saturn, so you may feel like your efforts aren’t paying.
Consider and take to heart the classic image of the Virgin with a sheaf of wheat in her hand: you must start with the seed before you see the harvest, people.
Being an earth sign, Virgo is great at grounding and grinding; however, on the heels or rays of this new moon, Mars, our planet of will and war, will form a rough square “and not in a sex way” with Neptune, the planet of psychic visions and crippling illusions.
This square can be expressed as confusing exhaustion and/or exhausting confusion. However, if you can prioritize rest, protect yourself from energy vampires, and make sure your proactive planning is based on a foundation of self-worth and an unshakable belief that you deserve more, you’ve become a shadow.
Virginity needs a rebrand
As stated earlier, Virgo has forever been associated with the virgin, but as archetypal astrologer Rebecca M. Farrar, MA “known as the wild witch of the west” reminds us, the OG meaning of virgin has little to do with chastity and any which is about sovereignty.
Virgin comes from Latin meaning ‘unmarried girl, girl.’ It wasn’t until around 1300 that it was used to denote a lack of sexual experience or simply chastity. In Greek translations, the word virgin meant ‘one for oneself’
As Farrar explains, Virgo energy, like virginity, is not something that can be given or taken, but instead is “an expression of wholeness and divinity.”
She asserts that the virgin goddesses of old – such as Athena, Artemis, Hestia and Vesta … and perhaps even the Virgin Mary – took lovers, but never husbands. They belong to themselves, they took it without ever being closed, living not in lack, but in liberation.
It really complicates the virgin/whore paradox on which the patriarchy teeters wearily. But I leave.
If we rely on this idea of independence, this new moon encourages us to step fully into self-mastery and consciously separate ourselves from people and practices that subvert it.
This is the last moon before the portal opens and eclipse season begins, and it calls us to act in service of ourselves, who we are, and who we can become.
Pay attention to the methods of Virgo new moon baby and singer-songwriter Fiona Apple: “I have a very steady tendency to parent, to monitor my development into the person I want to be. I’ve tried to keep corruption to a minimum.” €
Virgos are stereotyped as perfectionists, which is reductive since, really, these people can’t help but see the potential in all things and all people. In the brooding darkness of this new moon, we may similarly, if we are willing, be shown OWN potential.
The Latin root of potential is power, and indeed, there is nothing more powerful than what can still be. Virgo gets an unnecessary reputation for being rigid, but, in fact, as a mutable earth sign, it has no more supportive energy for meaningful change.
And just like virginity isn’t about hymens, change isn’t about speed—and Virgo energy isn’t about being flawless.
The great lesson of this new moon is that perfection is a stagnant peak, while growth is a constant state of evolution and improvement. In this way, we can accept ourselves as we aspire for more.
